“OMG, I got a full 8 hours of sleep, why do I still look tired?” The truth is, the delicate skin under our eyes is one of the first areas to show signs of fatigue and aging. There are many causes as to why this is more prominent in some people than others; it could be genetics, lack of sleep, dehydration, lifestyle factors, dermatitis, allergies, anemia, poor circulation, hormonal shifts, etc. Because of this long list of probable causes, the undereye region is a common area of concern for many patients in the office. If your concern is dark circles, volume loss, or skin creepiness, that is an indication that you are a good candidate for undereye PRP (platelet rich plasma).
Undereye PRP (platelet rich plasma) is one of my favorite treatments, because it is a regenerative treatment option— meaning it works by restoring and rebuilding your skin’s natural function. This treatment option is safe and effective — it is solely your own blood, no additives.
How does this work? We start by drawing your blood, similarly to what you would have done for routine lab work. Then, we will take the blood sample and spin it in our centrifuge; the centrifuge will separate the heavy red and white blood cells at the bottom of the vial from the “liquid gold” aka the platelet rich plasma that rises to the top of the vial. The “liquid gold” is packed with platelets and growth factors that stimulate collagen production, increase circulation, and repair tissue at a cellular level. When the concentrated plasma is injected back into the undereye area, it jumpstarts your skin’s natural healing and regeneration process — improving tone, texture, and elasticity from within. Because this treatment option is regenerative, it will take a series of treatments for the best outcome (3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart). Your most optimal results will be 4-6 weeks after your final treatment (as seen above).
As you can tell in the photo above, this patient still had some “undereye bag” concerns after the treatment series was completed. What she (and you) are seeing is the muscle pull of her orbicularis oculi; when it is a muscle issue, Dysport/Botox will help fix/relax it. After finishing her treatment, we added some Dysport to that muscle aka “micro-tox” to fix the “jelly roll”. In two weeks, when her Dysport fully settles in, everything will be nice and smooth for her! This is a prime example of how multiple modalities is often needed for most optimal results!
