Sculptra 101

The most undetectable injectable on the market and one of my personal favorites, Sculptra. As we age, one of the biggest changes we see in the face is a loss and redistribution of facial fat pads. These fat pads are what give youthful faces their soft contours and natural lift. Over time, they begin to thin and descend due to gravity, collagen loss, and changes in bone structure. Starting in our mid twenties, we lose about one percent of collagen every year! The good news? We have tools to combat this; treatments that stimulate collagen—like Sculptra—can gradually rebuild your skin’s structure and restore natural volume. Unlike traditional fillers that show results instantly, Sculptra is a biostimulator, meaning it works over time to stimulate your body’s own collagen. Sculptra is made from a molecular substance called Poly-L-Lactic-Acid, or PPLA. The way I like to describe PLLA (or Sculptra) to patients in my chair is referring to it as an “injectable medicine” for our skin — think of it like skin fertilizer. We inject the medicine into our skin, and over time, it helps strengthen the skin to help restore volume, improve firmness, and smooth fine lines. Sculptra is often known for restoring facial volume, but one of it’s most powerful benefits is how it improves overall skin health. By stimulating collagen and elastin production, Sculptra helps strengthen the skin’s foundation, leading to smoother texture, firmer tone, and a healthy, radiant glow. (That Sculptra glow, baby!) This boost in collagen not only restores lost structure but also enhances skin quality — improving elasticity, hydration, and resilience over time. Think of it as a long-term investment in your skin’s future — supporting both its look and its health for years to come.

On label, Sculptra results can last up to two years, and in some cases even longer with proper maintenance. If you are a first-time Sculptra patient, you will need to complete an initial series of treatments, with multiple vials. This series consist of two to three sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart. After that initial series, typically you require a once a year, “birthday vial” to maintain those results. The number of vials needed per patient varies, based on the patient’s individual anatomy. However, to give you a ballpark idea, a good rule of thumb is a vial per decade of life. For example, if you were in your thirties, you would probably need around three vials for your initial series, and then one vial yearly after that to maintain your results.

As always, if you have questions on this treatment, or any of Arya’s services, please feel free to contact me (my instagram is @audreylampe) and I would be happy to chat with you! Thank you so much for being here and all of your continued support; it means the world!

FUN FACTS:

  • Sculptra was originally developed as an indication to help restore volume loss for HIV patients suffering from severe lipoatrophy (loss of fat tissue).
  • Sculptra’s active ingredient, poly-l-lactic-acid or PLLA, is derived from plant sources like beet root!
