Don’t neglect that neck! The neck and jawline are often the first places we notice signs of aging, yet they’re the areas we tend to treat last. The Nefertiti Lift is a treatment utilizing neuromodulators (such as Botox or Dysport) that restores definition, softens neck bands, and creates a more lifted, elegant profile with no downtime! As we age, the platysma muscle becomes increasingly active, contributing to neck banding, early jowling, and loss of jawline definition.
The platysma muscle is a long, sheet-like muscle that originates from the clavicle and extends to around the mandible. This muscle also fuses with the DAO muscle aka the muscle responsible for the “downwards turn” of our mouth. The result of these muscles being hyperactive contributes to jowling, an increased show of vertical neck bands (when you strain or say “eeee” you may see these), a downwards pull of the sides of the mouth, less jawline contour, and an overall heaviness in the lower face.
For a visual at home, I challenge you to look in the mirror and pull downwards on your jaw. Notice how when you are doing that, you see decreased jawline definition, the contour in your cheeks vanishes, and your whole face feels weighed down! That is what is happening when our platysma and DAO muscles are hyperactive!
When we relieve the tension of the downwards pull by injecting neuromodulators such as Botox or Dysport into this muscle (along the jawline and into the bands themselves), it allows for some support of the lower face. This gives improvement of the jawline and jowls, and you may even see some support of the cheek and undereye as well! *See photo above, look at the patient’s cheek definition from the before to the after*
